Ivory is the New White in Wedding Gowns

Traditionally, white is the color of a wedding gown, black is the color of the tux and bridesmaids wear hideously frilly gowns. Brides today are bucking tradition, including the color of their gown. Ivory has taken over as the most popular color for brides everywhere.

The reason for this change in tradition is simple. Pre-wedding situations are not the conventional ones of the past, where a bride moves from her father's house to her husband. In fact, most couples today live together before taking the plunge into marital bliss. As a result, most brides are not the virginal blushing brides of yesterday.

Wearing a white wedding gown no longer holds the same connotation it used to have and therefore, anyone can wear white. With this change, brides are foregoing white altogether.

The other reason for this transfer of power is that ivory simply looks better on everyone. Stark white can look fabulous on tanned or darker skinned brides, but it completely washes out the rest of us who have little coloring or very pale skin tones.

Ivory is a warmer shade that highlights the skin and looks warm and lovely on all skin tones. If you are still concerned that people will "talk" if you don't wear white, the difference in color is quite subtle. People probably won't even know it's not white unless you tell them.

* Other Colors Are Taking Over

While ivory is the white of today, there are other colors that are pushing white by the wayside. Many brides are opting for some color or hint of color in their dresses. Champagne and pale shades of pink, peach and blue are all gaining in popularity.

Embellishments are another way they are adding color to their dresses-ribbon, crystals and pearls are all ways to add a touch of color. Some bold brides are even choosing two-tone dresses as well as more vibrant colors like red and gold.

* Ivory Is In Fashion

From small towns to Hollywood, brides are opting for the warm tones of ivory to make their wedding glamorous. Celebrities like Nicole Kidman, who also has a very fair complexion, are choosing ivory wedding gowns to say their "I dos" in.

Check out the wedding blogs and ask other brides what they are wearing. Go into any bridal shop; ivory is everywhere. You can find any style from the very simple straight-line to a gown fit for a princess, ivory is available to suit any bride.

Try not to get hung up on traditional wedding ideas. Times have changed and the couples getting married have changed. You won't create a scandal if you walk down the aisle in an ivory wedding dress.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable in what you are wearing and that you look good. Those pictures are going to be around forever and you don't want to look washed out and sickly. Let the ivory warm your cheeks and accent your skin tones.

If you love how you look in your dress, you won't be able to stop smiling.
